This training programme in adult venepuncture and hand hygiene is tailored for medical and healthcare professionals, and is delivered in accordance with HSE guidelines and protocols.
This workshop is suitable for Registered Nurses (6.5 NMBI CEUs), Midwives, Medical Doctors/Students and Advanced Paramedics. It is also suitable for student nurses but no CEU’s are awarded to student nurses.

Bloodworks run a one day Phlebotomy training workshop led by experienced medical professionals.
Our workshops are delivered by certified practicing senior Phlebotomists. We cover many topics including the legal aspects of practicing phlebotomy.
Our classes are small and we put a huge emphasis on the practical aspect of blood draws. We use primed arms and hands and we cover all the blood collection systems used in Ireland. We also cover use of Butterfly needles. (There are no live blood draws on this course. Practice is on manikin arms only.)
Competency testing is carried out at the end of the course but please note that live clinical practice is mandatory following completion of workshop.
Candidates will develop competency in practical skills to include blood collection and sample handling, combined with crucial knowledge of safety, infection control, patient communication and legal/ethical responsibilities.
Successful participants will receive a Bloodworks certificate of Clinical Knowledge Competency.
In addition to our one day workshop we provide on site training in nursing homes, colleges and GP practices.
At the end of the course delegates should be able to:
- Understand anatomy and physiology and correct vein selection.
- Identify and describe equipment used for routine blood withdrawals.
- Describe and utilize the required steps to perform routine blood withdrawal.
- Describe actions that ensure safety and understand relevant professional and legal issues.
- Identify suitable vein selection and identify factors influencing this.
- Practice safely in terms of infection control and waste management.
- Recognise any complications arising and be able to take the appropriate action.
Language: This course is conducted in English. A strong understanding of the English language is required.
